Wind Open Day 2025
The 8th Edition of a Flagship Event for Wind Energy in Romania
On June 16, over 150 participants (students, authorities, members of the local community, media representatives and energy sector experts) visited one of the largest wind farms under construction in Romania: VIFOR, developed by Rezolv Energy, in Buzau County.
The event, organized by RWEA (Romanian Wind Energy Association), took place in the context of Global Wind Day, celebrated annually on June 15, marking the 8th edition of this successful initiative.
The event was also attended by Energy Minister Sebastian Burduja, who emphasized the crucial role of the specialized workforce in the energy transition and highlighted the importance of training the new generation of professionals who will support Romania’s sustainable future.
A key moment for wind energy
Liviu Gavrila, Vice President of RWEA, emphasized the symbolic importance of this year’s edition, in a context marked by major opportunities for the development of wind energy projects: “We are witnessing a new generation of projects – with turbines three times more powerful than those installed 15 years ago – that are making a vital contribution to energy stability and security by providing a clean, accessible source of energy that complements solar power. In Europe, installed capacity has reached 1.1 TW, and projects in various stages of development are taking us towards 2 TW by 2030. The wind industry already supports over 400,000 direct jobs, with hundreds of thousands more in related sectors—from cable and bearing manufacturing to specialized components—contributing to a circular and sustainable economy.”
In Romania, the outlook is promising: the country could reach 6.5 GW of installed wind capacity by 2028, of which 3 GW of new capacity is expected in the next three years.
VIFOR – a flagship project for energy and education
VIFOR is developed by Rezolv Energy according to the highest international sustainability standards.
Phase 1 benefits from €291 million in funding from a consortium of eight financial institutions, including Erste Group, UniCredit, EBRD, EBRD, IFC, Intesa Sanpaolo, OTP Bank, Raiffeisen Bank International AG and Garanti BBVA Romania. The project is also supported by five PPAs with international companies such as T-Mobile Czech Republic, Slovak Telekom and Bekaert.
“We are proud to host Wind Open Day 2025, organized by RWEA at VIFOR and show the progress we have made. Education and dialog are key to building Romania’s energy future and this event is an ideal opportunity to share knowledge and best practices,” Alastair Hammond, CEO of Rezolv Energy, said.
“Romania has huge potential to expand its wind energy presence in the coming years. At Vestas, we are delighted to be working with Rezolv and other partners to install and maintain the latest technology – especially now with VIFOR, which will become one of the largest wind farms with turbines installed in the country,” said Cosimo Cannella, Head of Customer Project Execution East Europe, Vestas.
The project will generate up to 300 jobs during the construction phase and bring significant long-term economic benefits. At the same time, Rezolv will actively invest in the educational and social component, through partnerships that will transform the area into an example of integration between industry, community and vocational training.
Practical education in a strategic sector
Access to a wind farm construction site is a rare and valuable experience, especially for students preparing for a career in green energy. The event provided an applied perspective on infrastructure and the highest safety standards in the industry.
“Access to a wind farm construction site is usually limited and this visit provides a unique insight into the infrastructure and safety standards. The industry invests heavily in staff safety – one technician benefits from more than €5,000 worth of training each year. Rezolv and Vestas have implemented on this site conditions above the European standard, and Rezolv will continue to invest in education and social responsibility, turning this project into a model of a school-site,” Sebastian Enache, RenewAcad, noted.
Today, 70 students from Romania are already working in the sector, alongside more than 12,000 technicians and around 35,000 employees across the ecosystem.
About the organizers
RWEA (Romanian Wind Energy Association) has been the voice of the Romanian wind industry since 2008. With more than 50 members, RWEA promotes effective public policies, supports project development, trains specialists and facilitates Romania’s connection to European best practices. It represents over 3,000 MW of installed wind capacity and actively contributes to the country’s climate and economic goals.
Rezolv Energy is an independent renewable energy producer active in Central and South-Eastern Europe. Launched in 2022 by Actis – one of the largest global investors in sustainable infrastructure – the company is developing a portfolio of 2.3 GW of large-scale wind and solar projects. In addition to VIFOR, the portfolio includes:
- Dama Solar (1,044 MW, in western Romania – the largest planned PV park in Europe)
- East and West Danube (600 MW, Constanta County)
- Sf. Gheorghe (225 MW, north-east Bulgaria).
