OMV Petrom Expanding Activity in the Bitumen Field

OMV Petrom, the largest energy producer in South-Eastern Europe, is expanding its activity in the bitumen field, through two strategic partnerships with Romanian companies. The company is already present in this market, and the new partnerships will support the development of road infrastructure in Romania.

“We all want the road infrastructure in Romania to be extensive, modern and of high quality, and the availability of bitumen is essential. That is why we aim to double the amount of bitumen for the Romanian market by increasing storage capacity and by introducing a premium product which is the key for long last heavy traffic roads. In this regard, we have signed partnerships with two Romanian companies,” Radu Caprau, member of the OMV Petrom Executive Board, responsible for Refining and Marketing, said.

OMV Petrom will collaborate with Unicom Holding from Galati to increase its storage capacity. Thus, the delivery time will be reduced to less than 24 hours.

In addition, OMV Petrom will collaborate with Bitum Truck from Bucharest to produce OMV Petrom Starfalt® PmB, a premium polymer modified bitumen. Bitum Truck is a Romanian company specialized in the transportation and distribution of bitumen and petroleum products. The company’s main activity focuses on providing solutions for construction, particularly in the road infrastructure sector, where bitumen plays a crucial role in the production of asphalt and other building materials.

The product is essential for sustainable, long-lasting construction of roads and highways. The asphalt mixes that contain OMV Petrom Starfalt® PmB are characterized by increased longevity, high stability, very good deformation stability and high resistance to cracking caused by low temperature and fatigue. In addition, asphalt mixes are 100% reusable after end of life.

OMV Starfalt® PmB is a bituminous binder modified with elastomer, obtained based on a technology developed in OMV laboratories. The production process is patented by OMV, with nearly 40 years of experience in PmB production and will be replicated in Romania.

OMV created its premium quality bitumen products from carefully selected crude oils, using gentle distillation to ensure the highest standards. They have already supplied over 2.5 million metric tons of OMV Starfalt® PmB to customers across the world, demonstrating its extraordinary quality.

Bitumen is a petroleum derivate that has been used as natural asphalt in road construction and other applications for over 4,000 years. Today, to meet modern construction requirements, it is made from a complex mixture of specialized processed crude oil components.
