Historic Milestone on the Bucharest Stock Exchange: Hidroelectrica Surpasses RON 70bn Market Cap
On April 16, 2026, at the opening of the trading session, Hidroelectrica’s market capitalization surpassed the RON 70 billion mark, reaching as high as RON 72.4 billion during the first minutes of trading—an all-time record for the Bucharest Stock Exchange. The significant increase came on the back of the company’s ambitious investment plans, coupled with the consolidation of its position as Romania’s largest electricity producer and supplier, along with a growing focus on improving the efficiency of its trading operations. The remarkable performance since the beginning of the year—a return of nearly 30%, about 10 percentage points above the BET index average—confirms that the “market sentiment” is relevant for Hidroelectrica.
“The fact that we have surpassed the RON 70 billion mark clearly shows that the market has confidence in the direction we are heading. It is the result of our work over the past few years—greater investments, the continuation of projects already underway, new projects, and a constant effort to make the company more efficient and better adapted to the realities of the energy sector. We have clearly committed to a strategy of diversifying and hybridizing our portfolio by integrating production capacities with storage solutions and new technologies. We will continue at this pace, with a focus on development, digitalization, and creating real value for shareholders, while contributing to a more stable and cleaner energy system in Romania,” said Bogdan Badea, CEO of Hidroelectrica.
While Hidroelectrica shares approached the market capitalization threshold of RON 70 billion—corresponding to a share price of RON 155.60—without reaching it during the trading session on April 15, 2026, this level was surpassed right from the start of trading on April 16, 2026. Subsequently, the price continued to rise to a high of RON 161 around 10:36 a.m., bringing the company’s market capitalization to over RON 72.4 billion, a new record for the Bucharest Stock Exchange.
After the first hour of trading, the stock was trading around RON 160, corresponding to a market capitalization of nearly RON 72 billion. Since the beginning of the year, the return has reached approximately 29%, the fifth-highest on the BET, nearly 10 percentage points above the index’s performance.
After significantly increasing its capital expenditures (CAPEX) in 2025 to RON 781 million, Hidroelectrica plans to continue its ambitious investment plan in 2026, according to the 2026 Budget, which will be published at the end of April, along with the convening notice for the GMS to approve it.
Hidroelectrica has consolidated its position as Romania’s largest electricity producer, generating 100% green energy, with a market share of approximately 27% over the past five years, and has become, in record time (less than 4 years), the largest electricity supplier in Romania, recording a market share of 17.4% of the total market and 18.6% of the competitive segment as of December 31, 2025. The company manages a portfolio of 188 hydropower plants, with an installed capacity of over 6.3 GW, as well as the Crucea Nord wind farm, with an installed capacity of 108 MW, where a new wind turbine will be commissioned in May–June 2026, a storage battery with a rated output of 36 MW and a storage capacity of 72 MWh.
