Romanian Energy Market Conference

Edition II - Energy Market Post Price Capping

The event “Romanian Energy Market Conference – The Energy Market Post Price Capping,” organized by the Intelligent Energy Association on March 2, focuses on topics of utmost interest and relevance regarding the liberalization of the gas market in Romania – impact and consequences.

After a long period of regulated electricity and natural gas prices, Romania’s energy market is undergoing a major restructuring process. The energy market functions as an ecosystem—intervention in one market segment to protect it will inevitably have an impact on other segments, and the relevant players in the energy sector are striving to maintain a balance between security of gas supply, affordability, and sustainability.

It is necessary to continuously monitor the estimated impact and actual effect of intervention measures at both national and regional level, in parallel with recovery measures to ensure competitiveness in the economic environment, educate household consumers, and protect those living in vulnerable households.

Discussion topics at the event include:

  • Scheme for protecting natural gas consumers after April 1, 2026
  • Removal of the cap on electricity prices in 2025. Where did it go wrong?
  • Why is a free gas market not desired in Romania?
  • Do these schemes really protect vulnerable consumers in Romania?
  • Energy poverty has crossed the systemic threshold in Romania. How can it be reduced?

The debate will be supported by the following speakers:

  • Bogdan Gruia Ivan, Energy Minister
  • Aura Sabadus – Energy Expert, ICIS London
  • Daniela Daraban, Executive Director, ACUE Federation
  • Laurentiu Urluescu, President, Romanian Energy Suppliers Association (AFEER)
  • Dumitru Chisalita, President, Intelligent Energy Association

Moderator: Marius Petrescu, Gas and Energy Markets Expert, Member of the Intelligent Energy Association
